Ceratostigma plumbaginoides is a superb ground cover or edging plant for adding late colour to garden. In summer the red stems of this low spreading, woody perennial are clothed in bright green leaves which gradually change colour into shades of bright scarlet and finally maroon red as the season progresses. The fiery autumnal foliage colours and clusters of vibrant blue flowers makes these compact, little plants a valuable addition to any garden or border. Also helps to attract butterflies.

How to take care of Ceratostigma plumbaginoides

If you are gardening in a small space, restrict its spread or plant it in a wall or between stones or paving. It appreciate sun and need as warm a spot as possible. It will become drought tolerant once established. In early or mid-spring cut back the flowered shoots to within 2.5cm (1in) of the old growth. After pruning apply a generous mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. Technically a subshrub as it form reasonably woody stems, though they tend to die back each winter returning in late spring with foliage before doing its thing in late summer in autumn
