Picea abies Nidiformis or birds nest spruce is a dense multi-stemmed evergreen shrub with a rounded form. The cultivar ‘Nidiformis’ is a slow-growing dwarf Norwegian fir with green foliage which emerges lime green in spring and darkens as it matures. Mature plants have a depression or “nest” in the center of the flattened top, hence its common name of bird’s-nest spruce. A great addition to the rock and heather gardens, also looks good in pots and troughs.

How to take care of Picea abies Nidiformis- Nest Spruce

In general : Picea abies Nidiformis- Nest Spruce dislike wet feet, therefore plant in well-drained soil which has been improved with some compost, you can improve soil drainage by mixing in some sand or grit to the planting holes. Picea abies Nidiformis- Nest Spruce have strong preference for sandy, acidic soils. At the start of winter water the Picea abies Nidiformis- Nest Spruce well so that they go into the winter with a moisture boost. As Picea abies Nidiformis- Nest Spruce are evergreen trees, they keep on dehydrating all winter long. Avoid shading the base of the plant to prevent the lower part also turning brown - it does not stand shade. Do not apply fertilizer until your trees have been in the ground for at least 6 -8 weeks. It could burn the new roots. During Feb and March add some Natural Kieserite (Magnesium Sulphate) on top of the soil to improve the foliage colour, if you cannot obtain it, organic fertilizer will suffice. Picea abies Nidiformis- Nest Spruce require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and should only be pruned to remove any dead and old wood.
