Eryngium bourgatii or Sea Holly is an herbaceous perennial with deeply lobed thistle like silver-veined leaves, and vivid blue, branching stems bearing delicate whorls of spikes with narrow, spiny, usually silvery-blue or violet bracts. Highly attractive to bees and butterflies.
The long lasting prickly flowers are cherished by florists who use them for both fresh and dried flower arrangements.

How to take care of Eryngium bourgatii
Happiest in dry, well-drained soil that is poor to moderately fertile. Full sun is essential as is protection from winter wet as it may be affected by powdery mildews and root rot. Although you can cut back flower stems after flowering to encourage new growth for the following season the seedheads are a very attractive feature so are usually left over winter. Watch out for leaf and bud eelworms. Clumps can be divided in spring but they dislike root disturbance.
