Echinacea also known as Rudbeckia purpurea or Coneflower is a lovely perennial for the summer border. They flower from late summer onwards with deep pink to purple flowers and a remarkable deep brown cone in the centre of the flower. A great plant for the mid summer border decorating well into winter, as the cones are very decorative once frozen over. They produce hundreds of big flowers once settled and make long lasting cut flowers for fresh or dried flower arrangements.

How to take care of Echinacea purpurea

Echinacea purpurea is a short-lived perennial which thrives in any reasonable garden soil, in a sunny, sheltered spot. Echinacea purpurea will tolerate dry and warm climates but do not allow Echinacea purpurea to dry out. Stake the stems for support when necessary. Remove dead flower heads to stimulate new growth. Cut Echinacea purpurea down to ground level in late autumn and apply a light mulch of well-composted chicken manure or leaf mould. If supplied as bare roots: Please soak the bare roots for 12-18 hours (do not exceed 24 hours). This allows them to take up the maximum amount of water without doing any injury to the plant.

High nitrogen fertilizer is not recommended, especially when growing Echinacea for root harvest, it can result in a weakened root system. Please soak the bare roots for 12-18 hours (do not exceed 24 hours). This allows them to take up the maximum amount of water without doing any injury to the plant.
