Barrenwort is great low maintenance plant for the shaded-garden, excellent for edging or as a ground cover. Plants form a bushy mound of dark heart-shaped green foliage with a red tinge, which turns burgundy in autumn. In spring, pretty star-shaped, crimson, with creamy-yellow showy flowers appear on the ends of thin wiry stems. A deciduous perennial that takes a few years to reach a mature size but plants are long-lived and very sturdy.

How to take care of Epimedium x Rubrum

Epimedium x Rubrum grows well in most well drained soil conditions but dislikes wet and alkaline soils. Remarkably drought tolerant once established. Epimedium x Rubrum don’t like a full sun position so plant in light or full shade. Whilst Epimedium x Rubrum cope well with dry shade, more moisture and humus in the soil is beneficial. The foliage is best cut off at ground level shortly before new leaves emerge in spring, so as to fully reveal their beauty of form and colour. Ideally, a mulch should then be applied to protect the new growth from frosts. Divide clumps in autumn or spring.
