How to take care of Picea omorika

Plant conifers in well-drained soil and avoid waterlogging. To improve the soil, mix compost into the topsoil or add sand or gravel under the roots. Water roots thoroughly (2 - 3 hours) before planting and water daily for the first 6-8 weeks. At the beginning of winter, water the conifer extensively so that the root ball is nice and moist. Conifers are evergreen, which means that they lose moisture through their leaves throughout the winter. During the frost period they can turn brown because the supply of moisture from the roots to the leaves is disturbed. Fertilise with magnesium and lime in early spring. The soil must not be acidic, otherwise the needles and leaves will turn brown. Please fertilise only after the tree has been in the ground for 6 - 8 weeks. Otherwise you run the risk of cauterising the roots. For a conifer hedge, dig a trench 30 cm wide and 40 cm deep and plant 3 conifers per metre. Fill the planting trench with a 50-50 mixture of topsoil and compost. Planting Apply a layer of mulch in winter to protect the plants from frost.
