Magnolia Susan 20-30 cm
Magnolia Susan 20-30 cm
Magnolia Susan is a compact magnolia shrub grown for its striking, tulip-shaped purple flowers in spring, bringing a gently elegant note to outdoor spaces.
Location
Plant outdoors in a sunny spot. A sheltered position is ideal, as magnolias prefer less exposure to strong wind.
Growth habit and size
This shrub grows steadily into a well-proportioned magnolia, reaching around 2–3 m in height and spreading to about 125–150 cm over time. Allow roughly 150 cm between plants to give it the space it needs.
Plant care
Magnolia Susan does well in peaty soil. When planting, loosening the roots and improving the planting hole with potting compost helps the plant settle in and manage moisture more evenly.
Pruning and maintenance
After planting, water well and firm the soil around the plant. About four weeks later, you can apply a small handful of organic fertiliser on the soil around the base.
Winter hardiness
This magnolia is hardy down to –15°C, making it suitable for gardens that experience cold winter conditions.

Instructions
Remove the plant from its nursery pot and gently loosen the root ball so the roots can grow outwards.
Soak the root ball in a bucket of water for 10–12 hours before planting.
Dig a planting hole so the root ball sits just below soil level.
Mix the soil with some potting compost so it holds moisture while still draining well.
Place the plant in the hole with the roots spread out, backfill with soil, and firm down.
Water thoroughly after planting.
After 4 weeks, sprinkle a small handful of organic fertiliser on the soil around the plant.
