One of the most popular new ornamental grasses available. Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus' gets it’s name from the wonderful horizontal stripes on it’s foliage, the dark green leaves are zebra-striped with golden yellow bands. Small pink flowers appear above the foliage in late summer, gradually turning into silvery white plumes in autumn.

How to take care of Miscanthus sinensis Zebrinus

Miscanthus can remain in the ground for at least fifteen to twenty years. First year growth is insufficient. New shoots emerge around March each year, growing rapidly in June-July, producing bamboo-like canes. It dies back naturally in the autumn/winter; the leaves fall off, providing nutrients for the soil. This growth pattern is repeated every year. However, their spread is slow and there is little risk of uncontrolled invasion of hedges or fields. Suitable for any well drained soil, plant in a sunny or partially shaded position. Enrich the planting site with organic matter prior to planting. Plant in a hole deep enough so that the root ball will be a little deeper than the plant was growing in its container. Mulch grasses with organic material in the autumn to protect roots and shoots from freezing. Grasses which die back completely in winter can be rejuvenated by cutting the entire plant back to about 10cm in early spring.

Miscanthus spreads naturally by means of underground storage known as rhizomes. Divide grasses every few years in the spring just as they are beginning to break dormancy. Dig the plant up and cut the clump into divisions with a sharp knife or spade, replant the divisions.
