How to take care of Onion Improved Brunswick

Start off inside in seed trays from December or sow directly outdoors in seedbeds from March onwards. Size of onions is ruled by the amount of daylight they get. Plant out in a sunny location, in well-drained soil. If soil is acidic, add lime in autumn. Rake well-rotted manure into the soil in autumn and add fish, blood and bone fertiliser before sowing. Sow seeds 1cm deep, 20cm apart in rows 40cm apart, mist over with water after planting. Germination takes approx 3 weeks. Once the new seedlings have begun to push through the soil they can be thinned out if necessary, the more space they have the bigger your onions will be. Mulch around plants to deter weeds, retain moisture and protect onions. Keep soil evenly moist, and feed every 3 weeks with a balanced fertiliser, following label directions. Remove weeds regularly as they will use up all nutrients in the soil badly affecting your crop. Your main crop should be ready for harvesting in approx 24 weeks, you can tell they are almost ready when foliage begins to yellow and droop. When this occurs, stop watering and lift them on a dry day a couple of weeks later. After lifting, hang them in a cool; airy spot to dry out completely, they will be ready for eating a couple of weeks later.
