How to take care of Brussels Sprouts Groninger

Brussels sprouts do best in a partially shaded location with reasonably firm soil. For best results dig in plenty of well rotted manure or compost early the autumn before planting time (this must be done months before planting). They do not do well in very acid soil; if your soil is acid then apply lime during soil preparation. Sow the seed thinly 1.2cm deep into seedbed drills and cover them over with soil, lightly firm with the head of the rake. Or start them off indoors in a seed tray. When the plants are about 2.5cm tall, prick out and thin seedlings to about 10cm apart in rows. The seedlings are ready to be planted out to a permanent position when they are about 10cm tall. Space the plants approx 50cm apart. Always firm the soil around each plant to prevent air pockets and water well. The sprouts will be ready for picking in approx 3 months. The taste of the sprouts will improve after a few nights of frost (if necessary use the freezer).
