Yes, you can grow an Olive Tree in your garden as a patio Standard tree. They are strong, evergreen and cold resistant for southern regions but in the North they require some winter protection. They have a slow steady growth and are easy to maintain. Olive trees are drought resistant and very tough.

How to take care of Standard Olive - Olea Europaea

This tree will grow in a sheltered spot in full sun. Ensure that there has very good drainage, at least 5 cm of pebbles at the bottom of the pot, which should have a large hole in the bottom. For the first few years, water regularly during their growth period. Be sure not to let the soil dry out between seasons by watering it weekly until well established after that the rainwater is sufficient. Bring indoors for winter. During spring and summer fertilize regularly with an organic fertilizer. Each spring the shrub ought to be transplanted to a larger pot. The right time to prune is from December to February. Be careful, as a bacterial disease known as (Olive Knot) can spread from tools used during the rainy months. Another fungal disease prone to olive trees is (Verticillum Wilt), caused by water logging the soil and spreading up through the roots. Plants without fruit should be kept in a light but cool place (10°-20°C) to promote budding. Once fruit is formed it will colour within four months.
