This Salix Hakuro-nishiki is a perfect tree for growing in areas where space is limited and is a member of the Willow family. In spring its bare red branches will be smothered in highly decorative fluffy, golden catkins before it's pretty leaves unfurl. The cascading leaves emerge a pinkish-red colour before turning variegated creamy white and green; eventually they turn creamy yellow in autumn before falling off. This beautiful standard grows well in full sun or part shade although the best colour is produced in full sun. Photos are for illustration purposes only.

How to take care of Standard Salix Hakuro

This beautiful standard grows well in full sun or part shade although the best colour is produced in full sun. Grows best in fertile, moist but well drained soil. Water well in warm weather! Pruning should be done while the tree is dormant in late autumn or early spring before the catkins appear. Prune down to about 1ft every few years, to promote a lot of re-growth and a very dense plant. For a more open form, remove a third of the branches down to the ground every couple of years. Fertilise with a good general-purpose fertiliser every spring. If you are growing this plant in a pot make sure that the pot is well protected from harsh winter frosts, you can do this by either burying the entire pot in the soil and mulching around the top with a few inches of bark or leaves, or by wrapping the pot in a sack filled with straw and placing it in a sheltered spot or you could move the pot indoors to an unheated room, it does not need much water in winter however do not allow it to dry out completely.
